The Start Writing Podcast chat with author, editor and book nerd Mark Leslie on the craft of telling stories, and the business of finding an audience.
Episode 4: Mark Leslie
From punching out fan fiction on an Underwood typewriter at age 13, to published author and editor, Mark Leslie has built his life around stories. He is the past president of Canadian Booksellers Association, a novelist, speaker, and the driving force behind Kobo Writing Life, a DIY portal for authors and small publishers.
I chatted with Mark about his writing process (fast!, most of the time), how the digital era has changed for writers and booksellers, his recent novel Invasion and his upcoming collection of spooky true tales, Haunted Hospitals.
The slush pile (of submissions) is now the catalog . . . it’s not an editor in New York that’s saying yes or no to your manuscript, it’s readers in general. So we’ve just kind of moved some of the gatekeeping off . . . in an exciting and mostly positive fashion.
